A Beginner’s Guide in Plain Words

Artificial intelligence — usually shortened to AI — is technology that allows computers and machines to copy abilities we normally associate with people: learning, understanding language, recognising objects, solving problems, making decisions and even being creative. When your phone unlocks by recognising your face, when a streaming app guesses the next show you will love, or when a car steers itself down a road, AI is doing the work behind the scenes.

AI is not one single invention. It helps to think of it as a set of ideas nested inside each other, built up over more than 70 years. The most important of those ideas are machine learning, deep learning and generative AI — and once you understand them, the whole subject becomes much less mysterious.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Machine learning: computers that learn from examples

Deep learning: bigger networks, harder problems

Generative AI: machines that create

AI agents: from answering questions to doing tasks

Where AI already helps every day

The bottom line

Machine learning: computers that learn from examples

Traditional software follows exact instructions written by a programmer. Machine learning takes a different path: instead of being handed every rule, the system is shown large amounts of data and learns the patterns by itself. Show it thousands of labelled photos of cats and dogs, for example, and it gradually works out how to tell a brand-new photo apart. This style of training, where humans supply examples together with the correct answers, is called supervised learning.

Many machine learning methods exist, from simple decision trees to a popular approach called the neural network. A neural network is loosely inspired by the human brain: layers of connected “nodes” pass information to one another, and together they can spot complicated patterns hidden in data — patterns that would take a person far too long to find by hand.

Deep learning: bigger networks, harder problems

Deep learning is a more powerful branch of machine learning. Its networks contain many layers — an input layer, a long stack of hidden layers, and an output layer — which lets them tackle much harder problems. Because these networks can pull useful features directly out of raw, unlabelled material such as photos, sound recordings and text, they need far less hand-holding from humans.

This is the technology behind most of the AI you meet today. It powers natural language processing, which lets machines understand and reply to human language, and computer vision, which lets them make sense of images and video. Related techniques include reinforcement learning, where a system improves through trial and error guided by rewards, and transfer learning, where lessons learned on one task are reused to speed up a different one.

Generative AI: machines that create

The newest wave is generative AI — models that do not just analyse content but produce new content: essays, pictures, music, video and computer code, all in response to a simple written request. Chatbots and writing assistants built on large language models work in exactly this way.

Creating such a system happens in three broad stages. The first is training: engineers build an enormous “foundation model” by feeding it huge volumes of text, images or other data — sometimes terabytes of material — using thousands of powerful graphics processors working for weeks. This stage alone can cost millions of dollars. The second stage is tuning, where the general model is refined for a specific job, often using examples of good answers and feedback from human reviewers who rate and correct what it produces. The third stage is ongoing generation and improvement: people use the system, judge the results, and small refinements continue. A technique called retrieval augmented generation, or RAG, can also connect a model to outside sources so that its answers draw on fresher, more specific information.

AI agents: from answering questions to doing tasks

The next step beyond generative AI is the AI agent — software that does not stop at answering a question but carries out a multi-step task on your behalf. Ask an ordinary assistant about a trip and it may suggest ideas; an agent can go further, checking flights, comparing hotels and completing a booking by working with other apps and services. Systems that coordinate several agents together to reach a bigger goal are sometimes described as agentic AI.

Where AI already helps every day

AI is quietly woven into ordinary life. Customer service chatbots answer common questions at any hour of the day or night. Banks use AI to watch transactions and flag possible fraud within seconds. Shops and streaming platforms recommend products and programmes based on what you have enjoyed before. In factories and warehouses, AI takes over repetitive jobs, freeing people for work that needs judgement and creativity. It also reduces everyday mistakes, delivers the same quality around the clock, and can take on dangerous tasks — inspecting disaster zones or handling hazardous materials — that would put human workers at risk.

The bottom line

Strip away the hype and AI is simply a family of techniques for teaching machines to learn patterns, make sense of the world and act on what they find. Machine learning learns from data, deep learning scales that learning up, and generative AI uses it to create. You do not need to be an engineer to benefit from understanding these basics. AI is already in your pocket, your inbox and your car — and knowing how it works helps you use it wisely and ask the right questions about it.

Source: IBM — https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/artificial-intelligence

[4

post-249","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33
["GET
