What does moving your body actually do for you? Quite a lot, it turns out — and some of the effects arrive faster than you might expect. Health experts at the CDC point out that regular physical activity is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to protect your body and your mind, whether you are 8 or 80. You do not need a gym membership or expensive gear. Walking, dancing, cycling, gardening and playing with your children all count, as long as your body is working harder than it does at rest.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Some benefits show up the same day

Keeping your weight in check

A healthier heart and lower disease risk

Stronger defences against illness

Stronger bones, muscles and balance

You may even live longer

How to start, safely

Some benefits show up the same day

One encouraging fact is that you do not have to wait months to feel a difference. After a single session of moderate-to-vigorous activity, many adults notice that feelings of anxiety ease off. Children between roughly 6 and 13 often think more clearly and focus better right after being active. Over time, staying active helps keep your memory, learning and judgement sharp as you get older, lowers the risk of depression and anxiety, and improves the quality of your sleep. In other words, movement is as much a habit for your brain as it is for your body.

Keeping your weight in check

Your weight depends on the balance between the calories you take in and the calories you burn. Food choices matter, but so does movement. For general health and weight maintenance, adults are advised to build up to about 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. That target is flexible: 30 minutes a day on five days, about 22 minutes every day, or any pattern that fits your life. If your goal is to lose weight and keep it off, you will probably need more activity than that, combined with sensible changes to what you eat and drink. Everyone is different, so the exact amount varies from person to person — the important part is moving consistently.

A healthier heart and lower disease risk

Heart disease and stroke sit near the top of the list of causes of death, and inactivity is a major reason why. Reaching that 150-minute weekly mark is linked with a lower risk of both conditions, and doing more brings even greater protection. Regular movement also helps bring blood pressure down and improves cholesterol levels.

The protection extends further. People who stay active are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome — a cluster of problems that includes excess fat around the waist, raised blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and high blood sugar. Interestingly, the benefits for these conditions begin even below 150 minutes a week and grow as activity increases, so every extra bit of movement genuinely helps.

Stronger defences against illness

Movement also seems to support your immune system. Research reviewed by the CDC found that people who are physically active tend to fare better with infections such as COVID-19, with lower rates of hospitalisation and death than inactive people. In one study, adults who followed both the aerobic and muscle-strengthening guidelines were about half as likely to die from flu or pneumonia as those who met neither guideline. Being active also lowers the risk of developing at least eight types of cancer, and for people who have survived cancer, regular activity improves physical fitness and quality of life.

Stronger bones, muscles and balance

As the years pass, muscle mass and bone strength naturally decline. Muscle-strengthening activities — lifting weights, using resistance bands, or simple bodyweight exercises — help you keep or rebuild that strength at any age, especially if you gradually increase the challenge over time. Strong muscles and bones make everyday life easier: climbing stairs, carrying the shopping, cleaning the house. Older adults who mix aerobic activity with strengthening and balance work fall less often and are less likely to suffer a hip fracture, an injury that can seriously change a person’s life. Staying able to handle daily tasks on your own is one of the most underrated benefits of all.

You may even live longer

The long-term numbers are striking. One estimate suggests that around 110,000 deaths a year in the United States could be prevented if adults over 40 increased their moderate-to-vigorous activity — and even 10 extra minutes a day made a measurable difference. Step counts tell a similar story: for adults under 60, the risk of early death levels off at roughly 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day, while for those over 60 the figure is around 6,000 to 8,000 steps.

How to start, safely

If you are currently inactive, begin small and build up gradually. Brisk walking is a safe starting point for most people, and it asks for nothing more than comfortable shoes. Take the stairs instead of the lift, walk for ten minutes after meals, stretch during work breaks, and add a few minutes each week. Most importantly, pick activities you genuinely enjoy, because enjoyment is what turns a two-week effort into a lifelong habit. Your body was built to move — give it the chance, and it will repay you every single day.

Source: CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) — https://www.cdc.gov/physical-activity-basics/benefits/

[1

post-246","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33
["GET
